‘The Strange History of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ And Another Showdown

September 19th, 2011

The Strange History of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell premieres on HBO on September 20, outting the extraordinary struggle staged by gay and civil rights activists to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) legislation and attain equal rights for homosexuals serving in the US Armed Forces.

The film’s premiere aptly coincides with the scheduled implementation date for new legislation that ends the threat of discharge and other inequalities suffered by openly gay or lesbian military personnel.

However, as with many documentaries, the story that The Strange History of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell tells hasn’t ended with the film’s denoument — Barak Obama’s December, 2010, signing of new legislation repealing DADT.

Despite the lawful repeal and new legislation, the struggle continues still.

The latest twist is an attempt to delay implementation. House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) and Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), chair of the Military Personnel subcommittee claim the military isn’t ready to embrace the new legislation — can’t handle it the disruption (?) caused by the bureaucratic shift (?) — despite testimony to the contrary provided by high ranking military personnel, as seen in the documentary.

There outta be a law. Oh, yeah, that’s right — there is one. Its passage is very well documented in The Strange History of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Maybe the film should be required viewing for McKeon and Wilson, who are supposed to be upholding the laws that are passed with majority vote by the members of their Capital Hill lawmakers clubs.

Read my review, see the documentary, and let these Capital Hill lawbreakers know your thoughts.

New On DVD From First Run Features

September 19th, 2011

First Run Features is releasing two fine documentaries on DVD on September 20, 2011. Both are very worth seeing. You’ll find them in retail shops or online, and if you’ve already begun to think holiday gifts, these will fit very nicely as stocking stuffers for anyone who lives to travel, loves the circus life or fancies football.

Circo (2010) is an unusual travelog through rural Mexico and an engaging glimpse at the lifestyle of a small family-run touring circus. Filmmaker Aaron Schock follows the Ponce family who run El Gran Circo Mexico, a one ring circus that travels from town to town, setting up their tent, performing to the delight to rural audiences who can manage to pay the price of a ticket. The Ponces have run their show for more than a century, but their traditional way of life is threatened by inter-generational tensions and economic hardships that strain family and work relationships. It’s unclear whether the family’s ten members — including young five children — can reamin in the circus business. Read my full review.

4th and Goal (2010) – Six extremely talented and very likeable African American high school football players leave their families and friends in their hometowns across the US, and enroll at City College of San Francisco, a junior college with a subberb record-setting football team and legendary athletic coach, with the hope that they can work their way up to the D1 major college teams from which the NFL drafts its players. Deqawn Mobley, Albert Toeaina, Gibril Wilson, Tim Brown, Randy Sims, and Bret Jones want to be major players, and Nina Gilden Seavey’s documentary has you rooting for all of them, while keeping you in suspense until the very end, when you find out who’s scored his way on to an NFL, and who’s out looking for a different job. Read my full review.

The real lesson of CBC’s Swissair documentary

September 19th, 2011

Friday’s much-hyped Fifth Estate documentary on the crash of Swissair Flight 111 generated much arcing and sparking about its cause but, in the end, no incendiary device, no hard evidence the tragic 1998 accident off Nova Scotia was anything but. That said, the story raised questions that deserve better than read-the-report, cone-of-silence non-responses from the RCMP and the Transportation …
